Campground Has Been Closed
September 29, 2013
During 2011 a large sycamore tree fell on tent campers here, killing one person and wounding another. The DEP responded by doing a tree assessment of the entire upper river campground. The assessment provided evidence of hazardous trees due to root decay from silt buildup related to repeated floods. Most of the trees in the area were found to have compromised root systems.
As a consequence, the DEP closed all camping areas to protect the public. Although there were plans to remove the old, unstable trees and replace them with smaller ones, thousands of environmentalists have signed a petition protesting the tree removal. As a consequence, as is typical of New Jersey, there is now paralysis by analysis. The park is open but the campground remains closed indefinitely.
I parked in one of their lots recently with my motorhome to enjoy the day there and was quickly queried by one of the park staff regarding my intentions to spend the night. She had thoughtfully brought a list of nearby campgrounds that were open if I needed a place to stay. Fortunately, since I live nearby, I did not need a place to spend the night. A pedestrian bridge across the Delaware River and boat/canoe launches are nice amenities as is the scenic biking/jogging path along the Delaware River but overnight camping is not an option.
We stayed here in a Class A Motorhome.
