I agree with Canoe Freak on the status of cleanliness here. Having mostly camped in Oregon, this was a surprise to us. The first trouble we encountered was someone was in our reserved site when we got there. We were told his car had broken down (?!) and to scout out the only other available sites: 90 (horrible, ugly, no trees - this must be the "last resort" site), 69 OK but no flat spot for a tent) and 45 - which we ended up choosing for its nice shade trees. (On a side note, the site we had reserved (71) said "full shade" on ReserveAmerica, but NOT SO at all. Not a tree on the site!) We liked the Pine Hollow loop much better than the Dunes loop, but bathrooms dirty and one shower didn't work, making for a traffic jam in the bathroom. Also, you may think you are right on the beach but be aware it is quite a hike over the dunes to the beach unless you drive down to the day use area.
We stayed here in a Tent.

It's a shame what California's budget cuts are doing to our state beaches. Here in Sunset Beach, the restrooms are terribly dirty and you'll know the reason why when you see the sign where the management apologizes in advance because budget cuts prevent them from cleaning. Otherwise, the beach is still very beautiful and with big sites.
We stayed here in a Travel Trailer.
