A Good Way to Kick Off a Whitewater Adventure

August 25, 2013
My wife and I spent the night in this campground in our 35-foot-long motorhome the night before we were scheduled for our rafting trip. Most others who camped there did so in tents. The campground is not designed to accommodate recreational vehicles and offers no hookups. Roads are narrow and the trees on the campsites make it a challenge to maneuver and park an RV. Their nightly charge of just $7.50 per person for our campsite, however, was quite reasonable. Many other rafters drove up for the day or arrived in buses. There are water spigots throughout the campground, but you'll need a water thief to connect a hose. There are no dumping stations.

Not surprisingly we found most of the campers and participants in the whitewater experience younger than 40 and probably most were younger than 30, but that doesn't mean that grandparents my age cannot safely enjoy themselves. Whitewater Challengers offers rafting trips of varying intensity from a relatively mild 7 1/2 mile trip through alternating swift and mild river currents, which I took, to more violent rapids that can dump all but the most experienced rafters into the swift waters. We saw family groups with small children and teens and a surprising number Asian tourists during our visit. Loud live pop music entertainment is featured on the weekend and permeates the campground but mercifully ends at about 8:00 pm. A snack bar features hot food for purchase.

We stayed here in a Class A Motorhome.
