Re: opossum encounter
Opossums are relatively harmless. I say relatively, because they are still wild animals, but are usually more afraid of you than you are of them. When in the south, especially the coastal plains of North Carolina, you want to be more wary of the poisonous Copperhead snakes. If you see a black snake, or king snake, you can be pretty sure there are no copperheads nearby.

We came across one while camping in Virginia a few months back. My son really got really curious and fascinated by it and started running after it. Guess it really got scared 'coz it just fell down on the ground and started letting off this really bad smell. Quite nasty.

LOL. Now you know where the expression 'playing possum' came from. That's really the only defense mechanism they have, to play (and smell) dead.

We came across armadillos during a trip out west and we found them strange since we're not used to them. I never did research them to see if they were harmless, but fortunately we never got close to any.

Armadillos are pretty harmless from what I've heard. Pretty much mind their own business and then just roll themselves up in a ball when they get scared.
