Roadtrip from coast to coast
In March 2010, we will be leaving Quebec (Canada) to visit the United States during 2 months with our folding trailer. We will be driving down to Florida, then we will continue across the Southern States to California. We will return home through the Center States. We would appreciate any recommendations (campgrounds, attractions, activities...). Keep in mind that we are traveling on a tight budget and the more we save, the more we can do.

Visit our Website to find out more about us and about our trip. We will be posting new journal entries regularly.

Your local book store, (Barnes&Noble) INSIGHT GUIDES UNITED STATES ON THE ROAD by Discovery Channel. An excellent book showing maps, must see places, etc. etc.. It divides the states into sections by maps etc..

I would highly suggest stopping in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. They are both wonderfully beautiful cities that are rich in history.

Re: Roadtrip from coast to coast
Wow that is a big trip! I would think that the most important items when considering long distances like that is the condition of all moving parts and consumables on the trailer. Before your trip I would recommend the following:

new trailer tires, repack wheel bearings, brakes inspection and new shoes (if equipped), new or inspected spare tire, scissors jack, tools to change tire, good bicycle pump, tool kit with all the standard items like screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, plus any specialty items for screws or fasteners on your rv. A repair kit with spare everything that can break or blow like fuses, lightbulbs, epoxy, screen repair, sealing tapes, flashlights, workl light, jumper cables, 12V tester, Fluke meter etc. The same goes for the condition and maintenance of your tow vehicle. Very important to maintain correct tire pressure in all tires at all times. Balancing the load correctly in TV and the popup can have a big effect on the handling when going down the highway. Trailer should be as level as possible when connected to the TV and loaded. Tongue weight should be 10-15% of total trailer weight when loaded. I personally think if your TV can handle it, tongue weight closer to 15% of total weight makes the trailer behave a bit better at highway speeds.

To broaden the type of campsites you can comfortably go to and possibly lower the price per night you might consider investing in a portable 1kw or 2kw generator. This way you are not always dependent on there being electric power at the sites. Many times State Parks are some of the coolest places to stay and are lower price than most full service campgrounds. Usually the price may even be lower if there is no electric. These gems (portable generator) could also come in handy for an unexpected stop or breakdown, or if the only place you could stay is in the Wal-Mart parking lot while your TV is being repaired and there is no room or budget to stay in a motel for the night. I have two portable 20A generators that can be tied together providing more than enough juice to run my entire popup including the air conditioning!

That's all I got for now. Hope some of it helps you have a safe trip!!
