| My first camping experience was in Cub Scouts. I was at Camp Tuscarora in North Carolina. Some of the other boys had been camping before, I had not. I remember being really excited because my dad was coming. Usually our mom's helped out with the scout meetings because they were early in the afternoon and our fathers were at work. When it actually came time to camp I was surprised by what my father had brought. He's always been the outdoorsy type, going hunting, deep sea fishing and the like. When we finally got the tent set up, the queen sized mattress inflated and the battery powered TV positioned I started to wander "Is this what campings really like?" I looked around the campsite and most of the other boys had small tents, a thin sleeping pad under their sleeping bags (If that) and definitely no TV. I felt silly having a TV in the woods, as a child there was so much to do and so much to see. Looking back there must have been some football game on TV that weekend and Im glad he didn't skip out on the trip just to watch it. I had a great time with my dad, we did all the activities (whatever they were) and we even saw a deer early in the morning. Since then I haven't taken an inflatable mattress or a TV camping. Come to think of it I haven't been camping with my dad since. Not in some sad sort of way, it's just not his thing. Sleeping in a tent, on the ground, isn't for everyone. My mother has been suggesting they buy an RV for years. Being a fisherman my dad says yatch. I think RVing is much more my dads speed. Since my parents are getting older maybe they'll finally retire and we can all make some new camping memories! |
