Pop-up tents vs dome tents
Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy my first (3-man) tent, which I intend to use in a variety of situations: festivals/mountain/beach. I am undecided between the said two category of tents: dome and pop-up.

I am tempted by the easy set-up of pop-up tents, but I hear that most of them are single-skinned and so they don't prevent condensation from forming on the inside of the tent, when it gets cold outside. Aside from this, I assume they are just as stable in the face of winds as dome tents are.

Could anyone who has experienced both types of tent share which would be the pros and cons of each? Many thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: Pop-up tents vs dome tents
For me, rain protection was the deciding factor. I went with a tent that offered a rain cover that covered the complete tent all the way to the ground. Not just half way down, which i had in the past and it leaked with rain blowing sideways.

Re: Pop-up tents vs dome tents
If you stay in a tent with a full rainfly on the beach, you will suffocate in about 20 minutes. The rainfly keeps out the rain, but it also keeps out the fresh air. If all you are looking for on the beach is a sun shelter/minature cabana kind of thing, then get a pop up. For all other purposes, get a real tent. I think for your stated needs, you need two tents to do it right.

Re: Pop-up tents vs dome tents
Most people would opt for a tent with a rainfly. There is no cost savings either way. I do think there is a weight savings with most popups. As far as whether or not you can get by with a popup tent in cooler/damp weather, that's your own personal comfort level. I have seen (young) people in northern Michigan (40 to 50 degrees at night) sleep right on the shore of a lake in a sleeping bag and NO TENT. It made me shiver just to look at them. So what's inappropriate for one person might be just fine for another. I personally wouldn't go with a popup tent unless sleeping in my vehicle was a fall back option, if the need arose. But I'm a wuss when it comes to sleeping in a wet tent.
