> diesel spills from auto shutoff
We have many years of motor home experience, but are new to diesel. We have had overflows three times recently on fill-ups in truck lanes. In all three cases, the automatic shutoff cut off the flow, but not before a surge ran diesel fuel back out the filler pipe and down the side of the coach. What am I missing? Do the truck lanes have higher flow rates such that the auto shutoff can't respond fasten enough? Is the filler on a truck different enough that the shutoff works there but not on a motorhome fill pipe?

Back when I was driving tractor trailer, if we spilled fuel at the company pumps while fueling up, it was a chargeable accident. We were to stand there with hand on the nozzle the whole time it was fueling. Those automatic shutoffs and diesel fuel just don't get along well. And then some gas shutoffs are the same way. That is why some states require the station attendants to fuel the vehicles.

Yes the maximum flow rate is much higher in the truck lane, and yes the filler configuration on a truck saddle tank may be quite different from what is on your motorhome, particularly how well it vents at high fill rates. You are getting a burp in the filler pipe.
