Asking your age in workamping application: Illegal or not?
My wife and I decided to give workamping a try this year. One thing that we noticed is that the forms they ask us to fill up requires us to write down our age. I thought that it's illegal to ask for the age of an applicant because of the possibility of age discrimination in work. Do we really have to fill this part up or can we just leave this part blank?

Yes, it is illegal but if I was asked and wanted a job, I would tell what it is, so what! A campground may need grounds/labor people who are young per'se who can handle a pick and shovel. At my age, (70) in good shape, I am not going to even try. Although most (if not all) campgrounds have positions for us old guys.

Although it is technically illegal, leaving that part blank may also be to your disadvantage. You can ask the campground owners why they require you to put down your ages, if you want. Illegal or not, I would also still write it down. If they do disregard your application because of your age, at least you have grounds to launch a complaint. You can't do that if you just leave it blank.

Another thought, I don't care about the age "thing", what I don't like is when (in todays world) you have to give them your SS number.

Re: Asking your age in workamping application: Illegal or not?
I asked a friend of mine, who is a lawyer, about this. He said that it is considered to be illegal for any company to ask questions the age or age group of an applicant and to ask questions that would tend to identify people that are between 40 and 60 years of age. The only time that an employer can legally ask for proof of age before hiring is when the applicant might be a minor since it's no longer about age discrimination but more of protection against hiring underaged employees. If at all, they can ask for a proof of age but only after you get hired.
