Cure for Fear of Tent Camping
With gas prices going up, we decided to alternate bringing our popup camper and do a bit of tent camping again. We tried to do it last weekend and one of our kids (aged 10) didn't enjoy it. She was up all night with all the sounds that she heard in the night. Is there any way to calm her fears?

Try getting them to bring an MP3 with their favorite music that they can listen to inside the tent. It will not only break the silence which, I admit, can be quite deafening and quite nerve wrecking. It's also something that's familiar to them and will make them more at ease. Just make sure that the sound level is not really too loud to the point that it will disturb the neighbors.

Sounds like you took it to the extreme and you camped in some wilderness area. That can really freak kids and even adults out, the silence that is. I'd suggest to try going to those private campgrounds that allow tent campers in. They are more filled with people and it can be a bit noisier so that it's not really that it won't be really be a shock to the kids.

I agree with padmej's suggestion. From the looks of it, I'm guessing that your kids have been used camping in an RV. Nighttime while tent camping can get all your nerves up, even I get that at times eventhough I've been tent camping earlier on. Giving them something to do and something familiar can help ease that. Of course, they will also need to get used to it.

I agree. The change of camping conditions can be quite unnerving for adults, what more with kids? I'd suggest to introduce them to tent camping slowly. Start with your backyard so that they can get used to the conditions. From there, you can take them to some private campgrounds that allow tent campers and then progress from there.
