Treating Wounds While Hiking
What's the best way to secure a sterile dressing pad over a bleeding wound? Do you use medical tape, bandage or just some plain cloth?

We always carry some NexCare waterproof adhesive bandages in our first aid kit. It helps stop the bleeding and keep the wound protected while we're hiking or doing any other outdoor activity. But once we get back to camp, I switch it to a sterile gauze and secure it with some medical tape to allow the wound to breathe and heal faster.

Medical tape to cover the entire dressing pad. It covers the wound from further infection. At the same time, it still allows the wound to breathe so it can heal faster.

It depends on the terrain. If it happened in a place where there are not that much bushes, trees, and other plant life, josh's method is the best way to go. But if the trail is a bit bushy or there are things that can cause the dressing to get damaged, that's when those waterproof adhesive bandages like NexCare will be the best option.

I'd go with the adhesive bandages. It would protect it from the sweat and bugs and all the scratching and scraping. At night, I'll switch it to just a sterile gauze with medical tape so that it can breathe.
