So I'm watching television last night and this thought occurs to me:

"If you go on 3 or less trips a year in your RV, why wouldn't you sell your RV and just rent an RV for those few trips you take each year?"

By renting you get a new, clean, reliable RV without the financial responsibilities that go along with owning an RV. No annual insurance costs, maintenance, or storage costs to deal with.

Can anyone think of any reason why this wouldn't make sense?

That might not necessarily be the case. I agree with everyone else here. It's not really the frequency of the trips, but the length of time that you spend on the road that you need to really consider. Of course, it's a completely a different story if you're talking about RVing in another country.

Before we finally got our TT five years ago, we actually rented out a number of different brands and models so that we could see which one suited us the best. Renting is good also if you're not yet decided on what type of camping you'd prefer: tent or RVing. It's also a good option if you're planning to go camping overseas.

Re: Owning vs. Renting
IMHO, one reason why this wouldn't make sense is because there are a lot of problems with your argument:

"If you go on 3 or less trips a year in your RV, why wouldn't you sell your RV and just rent an RV for those few trips you take each year?"
-My husband and I go on the average of two trips per year. One long road trip through different states that pretty much last 3-4 months. The second is one month during the summer when the kids are back from college. It's not the number of trips that count. It's how long those trips are. If you're like talking about 1-3 trips a year with each trip lasting no more than a week, then renting is fine. Also, if you really are into RVing, I don't see why you'll be satisfied with just a couple of trips every year. The two RV trips that I said earlier are constant. But that doesn't mean that it ends there. Every now and then, a few of our friends would call us up and ask if we'd like to join them for a trip the coming weekend. Of course, we'd grab the opportunity--a convenience that you'd only get if you got your RV outside waiting for you.

"By renting you get a new, clean, reliable RV without the financial responsibilities that go along with owning an RV"
-That may be true, but each time that you rent an RV, you still have a lot of fees to pay: insurance, taxes, and all that stuff. Then there is that thing about the policies of some RV rental companies if you plan to go to more than one state, like we do. We recently came back from an RV trip with a couple of our friends. One couple rented an RV to join us since they're just visiting from Germany. Apart from the fact that they were having some problems with their water system (completely debunking your claim that rented RVs are reliable), the cost that they had to pay for just a week, if my husband and I would rent out an RV given the length of time that we'd go RV on a regular basis, it's gonna cost us more than what we're currently paying. Don't know if it's 'coz they're foreigners or what. Still, it's not really an economical choice.

That's my two cents on this.

I agree Alban. If you're not sure yet about which brand you'd want to buy, it's better to rent out a couple so that you'll be able to see which one is the one that's fit for your camping needs and would generally be a lot easier to maintain later on.
