Re: Getting Teens to Go Camping
I have two daughters and my family love camping together. Our favorite place to go on camping is in Bryce Canyon, and Zion Canyon National Park in Utah.

I have two pre-teens now. We've had them camping since they were about 9 months old. They love it. Hope they continue!

Yes! It's never too late to start! Albeit, some teens may complain, but the more you get them involved in the planning (letting them choose what to cook for dinner, what activities to do while you're camping, etc), the more they feel the trip is what they want/like, not just mom and dad's decisions. Don't go too heave on device restrictions right out of the gate - make specific parts of the day "family time" with a hike, water sports, games at night, etc. Use their devices for the power of good: photos! Turn their photos into albums when you're home and/or frame one from each child.

Teens often travel in packs. The thought of bringing a friend may seem crazy for some, but you just may want to consider it. Your teen may not be so reluctant to do something if their friend is there (and think through who that friend will be; bring a happy, easy-going one who is least likely to cause you stress!)

Re: Getting Teens to Go Camping
Although I am not a parent, some of the group we go camping with are. At first it was difficult for them to drag their kids along (I mean that in a positive light), but now the kids seem to love it. One of the activities that has become somewhat of a tradition in our group is playing Jenga. They made one of the large ones out of two-by-fours and they play it for hours. As you can imagine, it gets rather tall and it captures the attention of other kids who are camping. Curiosity eventually gets the best of the other kids and they will want to join in. Now the kids have an outdoor and social activity with other kids camping. This might be something you can use to get your kids excited at a young age and they will want to play when they are older. Just a thought. Good luck!

Yep, feel the same way. Really important to help teens learn how to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors.
