Re: Teaching Kids Wilderness Survival Techniques
I agree. My eldest was just about 2, I think when he started trying to help out gather some wood and leaves for the fire. I remember I allowed him to help out in almost everything. Everything except anything that involved fire and hot stuff. He would still try, and it sure did me proud to see that the only thing I had to worry about was keeping him from trying everything his mommy and daddy were doing. Much, much better than trying to convince them to give it a go.

Great job, mike!

It's nice to know that there are still lots of parents that are able to get kids to enjoy the outdoors with all of the gadgets keeping them indoors nowadays.

My father started me camping when I was 5.
He got me into Cub Scouts then into Boy Scouts. My sister was in Girl Scouts as well. We went camping as a family as much as we could. We lived in a small town in up state New York and some weekends my father and I would just go backpacking off into the woods even during the winter! I learned a lot being in the Scouts and with my father and mother. My mother show me how to cook out on a fire and the best things to take with us that were easy to make and good for you. That was so we were not eating hot dogs and beans all the time.
My folks let me go to Scout camp for two weeks each summer where I learned much more. When I was 16. I was asked to go and work at Scout camp for the summer and teach Survival merit badge classes. Boy Scout and my mom & dad were the best teachers for me to learn about camping. Even when I was in my 30's my dad would call me up and ask what I was doing for the weekend? Then ask me if I wanted to walk off into the woods with him for the weekend just to get out of the house. And I always said SURE DAD I'll see you Friday night after I get out of work and I'll pick you up!

We can also teach our kids about the wild plants for their safety while camping. Like, they should know some plants, mushrooms and berries are toxic and can make them sick.

Re: Teaching Kids Wilderness Survival Techniques
I think teaching kids basic survival techniques is really necessary. My parents also love camping and they taught me about wilderness since I was 5 :)
