Teaching Kids Wilderness Survival Techniques
Even though we now camp using a TT, we would plan out at least one tent camping trip for the family every quarter. This is to give a chance for me to teach my kids some wilderness survival techniques that they can use in case of emergencies. So far, I've managed to teach them how to choose the right wood for the fire, use a whistle when they are lost and cooking their own food over a campfire. We're still in the process of learning about pitching a tent, but we're getting there.

How about you guys? At what age did you start teaching your kids wilderness survival stuff? What have you taught them so far?

We started teaching our kids around the age of 4. We started off pretty much the same way: getting the wood for the fire and using a whistle. Taught them how to make a fire by the age of 6.

That sounds like a really good idea. I have to admit that the only kind of camping that my kids have ever been exposed to is RVing. Something that I have to discuss with the hubby. Hopefully, he's game with it.

Re: Teaching Kids Wilderness Survival Techniques
You can start teaching kids about camping as early as 4 years old. Make this into a game of some sort and that will keep their attention and let them enjoy learning these at the same time. My kids are already in their teens and they pretty much are able to take care of themselves whenever we go camping these days.

It's never too early to start teaching kids the basics. You can start by just showing them and letting them watch you do them. If they try to help, allow them too. It all starts from there.
