Ideal age to bring kids camping?
We started bringing our kids out camping with us since they were 3 years old. Some of my friends were a bit shocked on how young they started, telling me that they were too young to bring them out camping. Is there really an ideal age to bring kids along with you when you go camping in an RV or tent?

Personally, I don't think it's really the age of the kids. It's more of the capability of the parents to handle the kids while camping. I've met some avid campers that even take their kids while they are still babies with them camping. If you're pretty much a seasoned camper and are confident that you can care for both yourself and the kids, then go and take them.

I agree with jeremy, it's up to the parent. Every campground I have been to has babys in strollers, etc..

Re: Ideal age to bring kids camping?
It all depends on why you want to take them camping to begin with. If you want to take them camping because you want them to appreciate it, enjoy it and really get the feel of being able to survive without all the techie stuff, then you might wait for them to be around 6 or 7 years old. That way, they are at the age when you can start teaching them some basic survival techniques and at the same time, they understand and can take in what's going on around them.

On the other hand, if you're just going to take them camping because you just want to go camping, then I agree with murffdog and jeremy that the age will be all up with you and how well you will be able to care for them while camping.

I agree. It's not really the kids' age that will determine if it is time to bring them out camping. It's really on how ready and comfortable the parents are when it comes to bringing them out camping. With our first kid, we only started bringing him camping at the age of 5. At that time, we were still tent camping and because he was our first, we weren't really sure if we'd be able to take care of him and if he would enjoy it.
