Job descriptions - good or bad?
Is it a good or bad thing if a campground has a detailed job description and requires extensive signed agreements?

Detailed job descriptions are common in the govt. sector, whether, federal state, or city, sometimes too detailed.
I had never heard of a job description until I went to work for the fed govt., before that, my job description was to do what the hell ever my boss said to do.
Good or bad thing?, I would think that's a matter of opinion, Personally I don't like them, all I see them as, is a way out for the lazy, not to do something, Like, "Pick up that piece of paper", "Nope, not in my job discription".

I had never thought about it in the ways you've described. I think I'm split on it myself.

Re: Job descriptions - good or bad?
Job descriptions protect not only the employee, but the employer. If you do not know exactly what your potential employer is asking for, then how do you know if you would want to work for them?

It also sets a clear line on exactly what the employer is expecting you to do as an employee. I personally have not worked at any job that has not had a job description. Sometimes that description changes over time, but not without my consent. It helps to keep that line of communication open. It also speaks about the level of professionalism that the potential employer has.

There is a fine line between over board and not enough. If the job description says that you will take care of the customers needs and does not detail what those needs are there is a problem. On the other end of the spectrum is the micro managing job description that spells everything out minute by minute of ones shift and leaves no room for the what ifs.

Find the middle of the road and visit with the potential employer about your expectations as well as theirs and you will find that middle of the road that works for you.

I agree with you. By not having a detailed job description, employees run the risk of being abused by employers by asking them to do nearly anything and everything yet be paid a meager salary.

Having a detailed job description makes it clear exactly what is the scope of the work that is assigned to me. I don't see it as a lazy excuse for me not to do certain tasks by saying that "that's not my job." Rather, I see it as a clear-cut list of what are the things that I'm to be responsible for, and which ones should be my priorities. That way, if things get hectic, I know which one to prioritize first.
