Camping near Washington DC, reasonably priced? Or RPI/TT/Encore?
We just joined this great App for all the reasons to make our travels a pleasant experience. My wife and I are going on our third year as "Full Timers", prior to this next year; we have be working as volunteers in State and Federal Parks. When you do this most of the year, it limits how much of this great country we get to visit!

So we are working our "Bucket List" for 2012 and see as much as we can by using our TT membership/Coast to Coast/Passport American/Elks and soon to join Escapee's. Traveling all the time can be a burden on the budget, especially the cost of Diesel these days!

Now for the question: Best places to camp outside of Washington DC that we can take the train or tour bus into DC. We plan to stay for at least two weeks to see most everything there is to see.

Your input and suggestions will be appreciated, hope to see you all on the road this next year.

Happy Holidays from Caryl & Ken

Welcome to CampingRoadTrip, Ken!

When do you plan to go on your camping trip? Lake Fairfax seems to suit what you're looking for if you're planning a trip between April and October next year. The standard rate for a full hookup site is $45, but if you're a senior citizen, the rate is $36/night. It's about 10 miles to three different train stops which can take you very close to the attractions in Washington DC as well as Maryland and Alexandria. You can check out their website at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lakefairfax/fairfaxcamp/ for more info.

Hope this helps you.

Washington DC/Capitol KOA. I admit it's quite expensive than most other RV campgrounds but it's well worth it. Clean facilities, lots of great activities for the kids, a really nice nature trail hike. They got a really nice self-service convenience store and on-site catering if you're not in the mood to cook. They have daily shuttle service ($12.50/person) that will pick you from the campground and then tour you around the different attractions in Washington DC. There's also a free shuttle service that will take you to Baltimore. If you want to take a train, there is a station about 12 miles away.

Cherry Hill Park! It's one of the finest campgrounds in America. Been there four times already with the family, and we love it. Buses go through the campground to take you to Washington DC itself. We got a pretty okay discount using our Good Sam membership. I'm not sure if they also offer discounts Passport America or the other membership that you have. But it doesn't hurt to ask.
