Spring Camping Trip to the Grand Canyon
My girlfriend and I are planning to head over to the Grand Canyon some time in mid-May. We're both tent campers and plan to stay at the North Rim campground. Since this is quite a tourist destination, I was wondering if we need to make a reservation? If so, how far in advance do we need to put our reservations? Also, do you have any tent campgrounds you can recommend there?

It depends on which part of the canyon you intend to go. The southern rim is the more popular area, so you'd need to go to make reservations right away. On the other hand, the northern rim is less busy and not really that popular. But it won't open until October. You can reserve online at http://www.recreation.gov

If don't mind a bit of a hike, go and opt for the Northern Rim. The campgrounds here are relatively more difficult to reach, but the good thing about it is that it's off the beaten tourist path so you are more likely to get some privacy. We went there without any reservations a couple of years back, and didn't have any problem. But if you want to, try giving at least a month in advance to make a reservation.

I'd say make your reservations as soon as possible. Lots of avid campers tend to go for the Northern Rim campground because there are less tourists here. Making your reservations ahead of time also means that you can request to reserve one of the sites that offer a desert view. I'd recommend getting it. It's so worth it, especially during sunset.

Re: Spring Camping Trip to the Grand Canyon
I'd recommend to book your reservation as soon as you can. Even though it's not as popular as the Southern Rim, the really good campsites here can get filled quite easily. Besides, there is nothing wrong about booking way ahead in advance. It's so much easier to cancel a booking because of unexpected situations rather than just waiting and waiting only to find out that the sites are full.
