If you are looking for a really fun camping trip experience you will never forget, you should camp in the channel islands. Wen there for an anniversary trip, and it was amazing. Tents only are allowed, it is away from busy roads, you are truely isolated, on an island in the middle of the ocean.

Santa Barbara north. Gotta check out Big Sur for excellent camping. Just south of Santa Cruz awesome also. Pismo area has some but not a favorite.

I would prefer Monterey. There are lot of things to do and also lot of places to visit like Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17-Mile Drive and much more so you can enjoy a lot.
