| Great location, but crowded | Nehalem is a big, gorgeous place in a great location. As such, everyone and their brother will be there, too. The four-star rating is pretty much for location and eye appeal. The sites, however, are very small and very close together, with a wide variety of to the amount of tree cover. The sites are particularly cramped on the short sides of the loops. Bathroom maintenance isn’t what it should be for the insane amount of traffic this campground gets. The junior ranger program here is great summer fun. Also, it is quite a tiresome trek over the dunes to the beach, but amazing once you are done panting and get to the other side. Despite the crowds, I will definitely go back.

Wallowa Lake was our very first camping experience in Oregon after moving here from Arizona, and now it is our benchmark. What an unbelievable place! Driving through farmlands to sudden majestic peaks emerging from nowhere. “Little Switzerland” it is. While my husband prefers smaller, more primitive campgrounds, this one has everything I require. Great facilities and a beautifully maintained campground. With tent loops and RV loops, there is something for everyone. And while you certainly will not have the place to yourself, you will not lack for things to do or see, either right at the campground or in nearby Joseph. Also, such a cool place to be open year-round!

| Great for a primitive camp! | This rating is based on my husband's camping preference. He would give it a five, as this is the kind of park my husband LOVES. He would take a 12 site, primitive campground with no water and vault toilets any day over a bustling, RV-packed state park. I am somewhere in the middle. It would be five stars for a few more amenities (and less bugs!) or even a shop down the road a few miles. But being one of only two campers in the campground, the solitude is unsurpassed. With the second best site in the place, the kids playing capture the flag and cavorting in the river... It can't be beat! If you need water and showers, this is not the place for you. If you want solitude and a beautiful river rushing by at your feet, bring it on!

| Convenient location is best highlight | This was sort of a different camping trip for us, not really an “outdoorsy” one, as we really just wanted to be in Bend, shopping, eating and sightseeing. So I can't really speak to any outdoor activities at the park. It was bloody hot the weekend we stayed, so perhaps I was a little more “gripe-y” than usual. Sites are small (especially on the inside of the loop) and many are on raised, gravelly, cement pads. Irritating was the ground near our site. It was just sandy gravel, horrible to walk through to the bathroom, not at all like walking on a well-trodden forest path. I guess that’s the high desert? Bathrooms ok. Love the IDEA of solar showers, but they were actually cold, take forever to get even tepid, at least in the morning, and impossible to adjust the angle to actually hit your body where you want it to. And there are no toilets AT the shower building? So you have to pee one place and walk to a shower somewhere else. The most annoying thing at Tumalo, however, is the “CAMPGROUND FULL” sign. I honestly don’t know that they ever take it down. I have never seen a ranger in the actual booth. The night we stayed, some poor girl was charging her iPhone in the bathroom, trying to find another campground. She could have stayed in any of 3 sites around us that were supposedly “reserved” but that no one ever came to stay in. SO MAKE RESERVATIONS! Best thing was the chipmunks. They were fun.

| Beautiful find and great location | We stayed here when making a trip to Silverwood, as the closer campgrounds to the theme park were full. What a find! Beautiful campground, picturesque little lake with swimming, boat docks and canoe rentals. Sites are large. The loops are a little tight, so I imagine it may be hard for some RVs to maneuver. Best camp shower ever! Wish we actually spent more time in the campground! Great visitor’s center with ice, rentals, etc. I would definitely stay here again.

| It'll just be you and the cows! | Be careful on the road here from Ukiah, as this is open range and the cows like to cross the road RIGHT in front of the campground. You may even miss the tiny sign that says "Drift Fence." Aside from the cows, chances are you'll be on your own here. And as it is fee-free, this is pretty unkempt, with frequent cow plops to avoid. The road in the campground is deeply pitted and rough and sites are very overgrown. But as my mother would say, "What do you want for nothing, your money back?"

Driving back to Pendleton, Oregon from Santa Cruz, we decided to stay the night in the Bend area. But when we got to Tumalo State Park, it was full. We were so thankful that we knew about Camping Road Trip to find us a close spot! Haystack Reservoir was a great find, easily accessed late at night. Very quiet and pretty, except the coyotes and the frogs. :) Clean vault toilets. Not a lot of trees on these West Shore sites so it probably is pretty toasty in summer. But the price is right and the site is lovely. It was late so we didn't even pop the tent, and we slept in our van. :)

We stayed in Sunset SB in Watsonville and weren't very impressed, but New Brighton was beautiful. Much easier to get to the beach here, and our site was huge. Bathrooms were pretty gross unfortunately but the showers were superior to Sunset's. And you can't beat the proximity to Capitola Village.

| Hit and miss sites and service | I agree with Canoe Freak on the status of cleanliness here. Having mostly camped in Oregon, this was a surprise to us. The first trouble we encountered was someone was in our reserved site when we got there. We were told his car had broken down (?!) and to scout out the only other available sites: 90 (horrible, ugly, no trees - this must be the "last resort" site), 69 OK but no flat spot for a tent) and 45 - which we ended up choosing for its nice shade trees. (On a side note, the site we had reserved (71) said "full shade" on ReserveAmerica, but NOT SO at all. Not a tree on the site!) We liked the Pine Hollow loop much better than the Dunes loop, but bathrooms dirty and one shower didn't work, making for a traffic jam in the bathroom. Also, you may think you are right on the beach but be aware it is quite a hike over the dunes to the beach unless you drive down to the day use area.

We love coming here. We actually live in Pendleton, only 22 miles away, but we love coming here because it is such a quick drive with the kids and yet we feel so far away. The cabins are great and are open year round. Really fun to come up when there is snow on the ground. Good sites for RV's if that's your thing. One negative is a lot of road noise when you are tent camping, because it is so close to the freeway. Friendly hosts, clean bathrooms and nice hiking trails. Even a couple of geocaches right in the park.
