The holidays are a time of great joy for most, as families come together to exchange gifts, celebrate the season, and give good cheer. But for less fortunate families and people who don't have a family, the holidays are more of a burden than a joy. Fortunately, some RV clubs are working to change this.

For Jean Maxwell, the holiday season is her time to shine. Having joined the RV Rascals of Colorado ten years ago, Gene has come together with her RVing friends to bring joy into the lives of the less fortunate. "Every year we do something different. In years past we have raised funds to help children who have been taken out of homes where crystal meth is prevalent. With the money we raise we buy backpacks for the children and stuff a present in the backpack. This year we are focusing on the troops. We have an RV Rascal member whose daughter is in Iraq. We are putting together a list of supplies to send to the soldiers, from lotions and band-aids to paperback books. We are also hand knitting and crocheting wool caps as a helmet liner for the troops."

The Humble Wildcatters RV club of Texas puts a personal touch on their Christmas gifts. Every year the club knits caps for newborns at the local hospital. They have made between 400 and 500 caps. The nurses put the caps on the babies to help keep their heads warm. The chapter also sews stockings for the babies for Christmas. The hospital then sends the babies home in the stockings.

In Nebraska the Explorer chapter of Family Campers & RVers has put on a Christmas dinner for the families and children of Ronald McDonald House in Omaha for many years. A couple in the chapter dress up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus and talk with the children. The chapter purchases a small gift for each child. They also visit the children that are in the Medical Center.

The Loners on Wheels club also jumps into the act during the holiday season. In New Mexico a club chapter organizes fundraisers and raffles to give gifts, food, a toy, and outfits to an orphanage in Mexico. Many of their other chapters run food drives and collect toys at christmas

As the holidays draw near, those who would otherwise been left out in the cold are being warmed by the thoughtful care of RVers throughout the country. That's the power of the RV community!!!
