This Halloween weekend the University of Florida Gators will take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs once again for the 95th time in Jacksonville, Florida. The game, which is rated consistently among the top 10 college rivalries, is a highlight for any college football fan. But it's not just football that keeps everyone coming back. Dubbed "The World's Largest Cocktail Party", the Florida-Georgia game is a weeklong celebration that allows alums to re-connect, reminisce, and, if they so desire, re-live their college years. For students, freshly graduated students, and other fans, it's an opportunity to fully embrace their college years in a dramatic party setting.
At the heart of the party is RV City, a massive area dedicated solely to RVs. A sight to behold, the RV area is purportedly longer than 10 square blocks. Within this "city" are RVs of all shapes and sizes, decorated with various Florida and Georgia regalia. Good cheer abounds and friendships are developed as neighbors invite each other to large scale tailgate parties replete with plenty of bourbon, beer, and entrees that run the gamut from steak to salmon.
As in every year prior, the football game is the primary focus of the weekend, especially among the coaches and players. The Gators are coming off a surprisingly mediocre season. They finished last year with an 8-5 record including an Outback Bowl win against Penn State. The Bulldogs, currently are set to avenge the Gators after last year's 34-31 overtime defeat. Georgia leads the series with 46 victories to Florida's 39 since the teams officially began competing in 1915. While the odds are in Florida's favor, the game should be exciting to watch as both teams fight for bragging rights on one of college football's most dramatic stages.
For alumni, the social aspects of the event are as important, if not more, than the game itself. Alumni are able to connect with old college friends and reminisce about their good old college days together over a beer. Many engage in good-natured banter with alumni from opposing schools. Some even party until the wee hours of the night.
While the outcome of the game is as predictable as the weather, the jovial spirit surrounding this incredible rivalry is a given. So get out there, make some friends, have a drink, and be part of a history unlike any other. Let the best team win!
