This was my first experience in the Adirondacks, and I don't think I could have asked for a better experience. We rented a whole island (Sable Island, 3 camp sites) for a group of 7. I was pleasantly surprised to see how big the island was! My SO and I were able to set up at one camp site and were still so far away from the group that we felt completely alone, but we could still walk over to hang out when we wanted.
We took a canoe into the island. It was a fairly long trip, but not bad. Our friends had a boat, and there was some confusion at first as one of the boat launches was supposedly closing which meant they couldn't dock the boat anywhere during the week (this ended up not being the case, but I would suggest calling to clarify the situation).
Another con was the toilet. I would have rather been told there was no toilet, because it was so disgusting, being in there made me want to vomit. Thankfully the other two toilets on the island were decent.
Final downside was our proximity to the road. At night, there was little to no traffic on it, but the occasional truck noise was disappointing. I would probably choose a different campsite for that reason.
BUT, the views, the STARS! (so many!) and the seclusion was absolutely worth it.
