Re: planning a trip
The best way for your trip is to know where you want to stop and then look for an area. There are so many ways to drive from on place to another.
You might want to drive through Maryland or West Virginia.
I advise you to plan the states where you want to go through and think about how long you want to drive and to wich city you might want to stop.
Then check on the campfinder.

Where's your last stop in NY?
With many years of RV travel, simply take a map and go. A GPS is a big help and if I get tired of driving, I won't travel 10, 20 or whatever miles to find a campground for the night. I'll hole up at a WalMart or Cracker barrel which are everywhere.

Re: planning a trip
I use MicroSoft Streets and Trips 2013. It is a very easy program to use. One reason I like it is that I upload a Mega file that has available all State Parks, National Parks, National Landmarks, etc. Retail venues are listed. You select which site you may be interested in and upload that one to open. I also create a Excel spreadsheet of our previous campgrounds with address information. In another worksheet I have family and friends information with addresses. I upload that and select as desired. I plan almost all of our traveling without printing one piece of paper. It is very easy to delete and change the route. I have found all the directions to be accurate. Geeks on Tour has a great Tutorial on using ST.
