Using a Solar Panel to Charge Your Batteries

Has anyone tried using a solar panel to charge your batteries? I'm not talking about those little maintainers, but one that actually charges the battery? How large should the solar panel be, and how much will it cost?

The size and quantity of solar panels to add to your RV depends on how much power do you use on an average whenever you go camping and also how many batteries do you have in your RV. Our motorhome has 6 100-watt panels that has an MPPT controller that allows us to convert any extra watts brought in the motorhome into amps while camping.

I would strongly recommend to try going to amsolar. They make solar panels that fit most motorhomes. Each panel's is filled with more solar cells but still lightweight. So basically you will only need a few panels.

We've had a 110 watt Evergreen with a Blue Sky 2000E 25 amp controller for 6 years now. We've set the charge voltage limit to 13.8 volts and it's been able to charge our 6 coach batteries and 1 chassis battery like a charm.

It's also a good idea to first check with the manufacturer of the batteries you're using for your RV to also find out what should the charging be. Don't just go by what the charger said. Me and my husband learned that the hard way.
