| Great family camping in east Tennessee | The setting is beautiful. The campsites are spacious. The bathrooms are clean, practical, and well maintained. The lake is wonderful. A great, great family campground in a somewhat cooler elevation. The camp hosts were congenial and helpful. The camp store was well stocked. The access to the Cherohala Skyway and Bald River Falls is fantastic. The only negative is the lack of water (and sewer if your rig is fully self-contained) at individual campsites.

| Most features are for the convenience of State Park employees | We applaud Tennessee for its many scenic state parks, but there appears to be a shortage of funding and employee motivation. Too many amenities appear to have been created so that they can claim completion, but the implementation and maintenance are poor.
Norris Dam State Park has two campgrounds. The one near the campground is quite old and dismal looking. The campground on the ridge is nicer.
Several campers said that this park is one of their favorites. We give the ridge campground a 3.5 on a 5.0 scale, but the bathroom , especially the showers deserve nothing more than a 2.0.
In the ridge campground, the sites are easy to enter and exit, especially for equipment 28' or less.
A newbie, driving an obviously rented motor home struggled to get parked, while a park employee sat in his truck blowing his horn.
We probably will not return to Norris Dam State Park, although it is only minutes off of I-75 at Rocky Top (formerly Lake City).

Positives are: (1) Large wooded campsites, (2) Very nice bathrooms, (3) and an impressive adjacent horse-camping area with barns and amenities.
Not so positives are: (1) No water connections at any campsites, (2) Property saw its best days years ago -- lots of "deferred maintenance", and (3) An abundance of signs at the beach area but few directional signs in the campground.
We would return.

| Excellent Family Campground | Very well cared for! Nicest campground bathhouses we have seen in many years of camping. Campground is on the beautiful, immense Kentucky Horse Park. Less than 20 minutes to downtown Lexington, Keeneland Race Track, distillery district, and restaurants. Park has many activities for the youthful and energetic. There was a scout jamboree in the nearby primitive camping area, but the park is so large and well-run that there was little or no impact in other parts of the campground. A definite 5 star campground.

| Deferred maintenance but convenient | Walnut RV Park was very convenient for us as we traveled west on I-40, pulling our Aliner in May of 2015. The owners were pleasant and the laundromat was a blessing.
Unfortunately, the rest of our experience was not so good. The park was quite run-down, and it appeared that many campsites had problems with inoperative utilities. The bathrooms would have been acceptable - although in need of paint and updating - if there had been hot water. Our showers weren't even tepid, they were cold.
The town of Vega rolls up the boardwalk at about 3:00pm on Sunday. Don't expect an open restaurant Sunday evening.
So, Walnut RV Park will do in a pinch, but better planning would have made me know to stay close to Amarillo or go 40 miles beyond Vega.

| For all practical purposes, campgrounds are closed | We planned to stay at this campground while traveling west on I-40 and pulling our Aliner. ERROR! For all practical purposes, Shell Lake Campground is closed.
We stopped here on May 8th. There were no other campers present. The office was closed. The bathrooms were locked.
Adjacent to the property was a motel. The desk clerk told us that for camping, we were to register at the motel and they would give us a room key so that we would have access to a bathroom and shower. No thank you! Just too weird.
