| Good place for day activities, sorry service at night | We went back to camp, relax and enjoy the campfire and more smore's. We were just sitting back when an about 450 lb Black Bear walked 2 ft away from me. My lady was very scared as this was her 1st bear encounter, but I just told her to remain calm as the huffing bear walked by ( aggressive bear?). When the bear had gotten about 10 ft away, I stood up and loudly said, "Hey bear," and clicked it with the flashlight. As it went on to the next camp, I said loudly to them, "You have a bear coming your way. Be aware." The next camp then came alive. It was around 10PM which was about that same time a mamma bear and 2 cubs were walking through the other side of the camp as I heard folks screaming over there. It was pandemonium for a few. The reason for the 3 stars is that I called the front office to see if they would have their security to come & help in the situation. I was told they have someone who could be reachable 24 hours a day for any issues that may arise plus private security personnel. I called all 3 numbers listed in the load of paperwork they give you when you check in, but to no avail. They all went to voicemail, then my lady said, "Call the Bear League," to which they said, " We'll notate the incident." They hung up and I then thought how unprofessional of a campground staff Camp Richardson has that they do NOT have a staff around to help with such situations.

| Good place, very beautiful and is easy to get too... in the summer only ! | This lake is, I believe, the highest drive-in camp/lake in California. It's right at 10,000 ft. elevation off Tioga Pass.
There are several campsites and a store that has great breakfasts to enjoy. There also is a "ferry" that will take you across the lake to the other side where there are seven alpine ponds that are well worth hiking around and fishing for trout.
Bring warm clothes -- yes, even in summer. It gets quite cold and the wind picks up quite a lot in the afternoon.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that because it's easy to get to, the area around the store, etc. can get crowded in the day.
Lots of bears. Bring bear containers, especially if you camp near the alpine lakes. FYI!
But it is just one of the most beautiful areas you'll experience!

| Soaring Cliffs, Lots of Trout and Bald Eagles !!! | I've camped at Gumboot several times and it's truly majestic. It's very easy to get there as long as the snow has melted... Ha... Got stuck last time... But once up there it's absolutely gorgeous! The few camp sites available make it a very serene place to camp.
Trout fishing is great, and waders or a float tube is a must. Most of the trout are in the middle of the lake and can't cast to the middle with out getting close. But once you do... it's on !!!
Be Bear Aware... Blackies are in the area... (they think it is a nice campsite too). lol
Also, there are several other lakes in the area that make your home camp site even more enjoyable. Just back east of Gumboot, maybe less than a mile, is Clif Lake (yes, spelled with one "f"). Anyway gotta hike to that one, but it's 90 ft. deep. Gin Clearwater, and there's even a small homemade pier that you have to traverse a rolling log to get to, but oh my, the fishing there is great as well. That lake is surrounded by 1,000+ ft cliffs, probably hence the name. Mumbo Lake is also nearby but about five or so miles away. It's higher up so don't attempt to drive their until summer! Haha... But the fishing at Mumbo is so awesome! Anyway I know there are several other small ponds in the area, and I highly recommend you picking up a Forest Service Map !
So Gumboot and area ponds are a great place to camp, fish, hike, etc. Be bear aware, though.

| Great and Relaxing Place! | I've been here every year for the past 4 years and am going again next week. My group I'm involved with actually has rented this place for decades and reserves the spot the day after each year's stay.
It's a perfect spot for family activities, right on a cool stream and very close to Gerle Reservoir for great trout fishing. It's plenty big enough to handle all your campers and love all the trees in the area. I highly recommend !

Lost Coast - Remotest stretch of beach area in Lower 48 - Awesome Camping ! | This past April, I went up to the Lost Coast area just north of Ft. Bragg, Ca. off Hwy 1 and Usal rd. I had found out about it through several friends and knew it was a must see. You find it just north of Ft. Bragg , Ca on Hwy 1 as it starts going back into the trees from the beach a few miles north, and then theirs a rd. called Usal rd , aka mendocino couty rd 431. its a mild to medium dirt rd that goes through the forest for 5 miles and brings you out to some of the best views of the coast and up 1500 ft or so above the ocean ... follow it back down the mountain on the other side, cross a little wooden bridge and their camping at Sinkyone state park to the left in amongst trees. several good camp sites there, then your at one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. I wish there was a place to up load pics here, cause I would show you what I mean ! ... the trail also goes past the beach area for another 19 miles up north towards Shelter cove, but you need 4 wheel drive past the beach area as the rd gets pretty bad. but when I went that part above the beach was closed anyway.... it's only open some every year... anyway , It is amazing up there and I highly recommend going ONLY during the week, weekends are when the locals come and have wild parties, etc. .... but I went on a tues-thurs, and I was the only one there ! Before I went , I watched this video and it was the deciding factor... I left the next day ... Lost Coast bound !
