Good park close to Chicago

If you're in a need of a quick getaway close to Chicago, this is a good option. We biked up from Chicago (~42 miles). The bike paths were good until we got to Waukgena. The sites were better than expected - we had a lot of trees/shade and didn't feel too close to our neighbors. It was quiet at night. I wouldn't say there's a ton to do in the area. The beach is fairly rocky and the water is freezing. There are a few hiking and biking trails, but we didn't do much exploring since we had crappy weather. The nuclear power plant is very close by which made an interesting walk.

We stayed here in a Tent.

Nice, family-friendly campground by the beach

What I like about this campground: 1) Very nice location, secluded, close to the beach, and only 10 minutes from the restaurants and attractions in the area. 2) The rangers are friendly but strict in enforcing rules, so no one gets disturbed by noise in the middle of the night. 3) Very nice trails for walking and biking. 4) Lots of shade. What I don't like about this campground: no lifeguards at the beach, no full hookups, no wifi or cable, not all the showers work, and there's no hot water in the shower.

We stayed here in a Class C Motorhome.
