Campgrounds Charging WiFi...Your Thoughts
My sister and her family just came back from a camping trip, and she started ranting about the fact that they were charged by the campground around $6/day just to use their Wi-Fi service. Quite frankly, I find the extra charge rather a bit over the top especially in those private campgrounds that charge quite a lot for you to stay there. Good if the Wi-Fi connection is always reliable, but more often than not, it will even be a miracle to get a decent signal and manage to actually do some Internet surfing done.

So what do you guys (and girls) think? Is it right for private campgrounds to charge for their Wi-Fi connection, or should these be given for free?

Re: Campgrounds Charging WiFi...Your Thoughts
If the amenities are really good in the private campground, I wouldn't mind them charging extra for the Wi-Fi. There are times when I actually choose to go for these campgrounds. Whenever my kids want to use the Wi-Fi in these campgrounds, I tell them that they will need to be the ones to pay for it since it's not free. That's more than enough reason for them not to get their noses stuck into the laptop all the time and do some outdoor activities. Besides, isn't that really what camping is all about? To enjoy the outdoors?

Re: Campgrounds Charging WiFi...Your Thoughts
No! Free Wi-Fi is one of the amenities that my family and I consider whenever we go and choose a campground to stay. I'm a businessman and I need to keep in touch with both my clients and my employees even though I'm on a road trip and camping with my wife or with my family, which brings me to my second reason. As a business owner, I know for a fact that it doesn't really cost that much to provide Wi-Fi throughout a campground. Yes, there is the expense that comes with getting all the equipment you need and to hire people who will be able to set it up. However, for as long as the service is good, RVers will be more than happy to pay and spend more time in your campground. That will bring in more revenue and roi for the Wi-Fi.

mike: Perhaps if I'm already retired, I wouldn't mind not having any Wi-Fi access. But since I'm still working and have to regularly keep tabs on what's happening in the office, I need it.

jeremy: You're right about that. I recently spoke with the owner of a campground we stayed in Nebraska. The Wi-Fi is not only free here, but also really strong. Apparently, it doesn't cost that much. He told us that all it takes is just a router costing about $50 and a subscription of about $30/month. If he could provide it at such a small investment, I don't see why other campgrounds can't follow suit.

I actually wouldn't mind paying, for as long as the connection is really good. In a way, it helps big time in limiting the access. Since we need to pay, it makes us--especially the kids--think twice about using the Internet unless it's really and absolutely necessary.
