We have camped up and down the east coast and there are lots of great campgrounds. It all depends on the amenities that you need to camp. Do you prefer Private Campgrounds, Stae Parks or Federal Parks? We a 1971 Shasta Compact and a vintage style Teardrop Camper that we use. We can camp with out power for up to 5 days at a stretch....using the 12v systems that we have. What part of the south do you live in, David? We live in the North Carolina mountains.

As was said, it all depends on what you want & how you camp, We like the Corps of Engineers Parks, all are on lakes or rivers, they have electric & water hookups at some sites, and a dump station, Bathrooms & showers, they have tent sites & most have some sort of hiking trails. You can check them out, here;
