Don't worry - your biggest challenge is out of the way now that the kids are of age. In terms of the new puppy, I've got you covered. There are plenty of products out there that will make your wife feel safe taking the dog on the trip. For one, there are dog "carseats" that will definitley keep the dog safe on the way to the campsite. There are also doggy beds, tents, lounge chairs etc. Be sure to makesure the puppy is leashed though. With all of that open space it is very easy for them to get wander off.
