What to Bring with You on a RV Trip

Pen ticking a checklistRVs vary greatly in how well-equipped they are. Some are like homes away from home, where as others are more basic. The kind of RV you have will influence what you bring, so if you are renting make sure you find out what it comes with, so you know what you need to bring yourself. Here is a complete list of what you need to bring to be fully prepared for your RV trip:

The Basic Gear

  • Bedding - choose what is most convenient for you, whether sleeping bags or sheets and comforters
  • Blankets and pillows

Kitchen Equipment

  • Plates, bowls, cups, mugs, knives, forks and spoons
  • Utensils (can opener/bottle opener, chopping board, spatula, tongs etc.)
  • Cookware (pots and pans)
  • Matches/lighter
  • Condiments (salt, pepper, sauces, etc.)
  • Dish soap (preferably biodegradable) sponges, and kitchen cleaners
  • Kitchen Linens (dishtowels, potholders, napkins, table cloth etc.)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Paper towels and paper napkins
  • Garbage bags
  • Containers - for food storage/plastic wrap
  • BBQ grill with fuel
  • Cooler - if your RV does not have a refrigerator or you want to have cool drinks without having to go inside the RV to fetch them
  • Thermos
  • Firewood or charcoal - this is often available to buy at the campground, but check beforehand
  • Fire starting material (fire starters, newspaper, paper, etc.)
  • Broom, mop and dust pan


  • Sturdy walking shoes or boots
  • Pants, jeans and shorts
  • Tee shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters and jacket
  • Hat or baseball cap
  • Socks and underwear
  • Bathing suit - if water sports or a pool are available at your destination
  • Pajamas, sweats or other sleepwear
  • Shower shoes/flip flops
  • Rain gear (raincoat, waterproof pants, etc.)

Personal Items

  • Towels and washcloth
  • Soap, shampoo and other toiletries
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Comb/hairbrush
  • Toilet paper
  • Personal medications
  • Contact lenses and solution/glasses

Camping Essentials

  • First aid kit (see Camping first aid kit essentials for details of what should be in your first aid kit)
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent and citronella candles
  • Flashlight/camping lantern, extra batteries and bulb
  • Camera, batteries and film or memory card
  • Folding camping chairs
  • Sunglasses
  • Swiss Army knife or pocketknife
  • Canteen or water bottles
  • Quarters - sometimes needed for hot showers and laundry
  • Travel alarm clock
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Compass
  • Whistle
  • Maps / Road Atlas
  • Hammer, saw and axe (hammer can be useful for some minor repairs and an saw or axe can be used to cut/chop firewood)
  • Tool set
  • Ropes, tarps, bungee straps, tape (electrical, duct, etc.)


  • Outdoor activity equipment (bat and balls, Frisbee, fishing gear, etc.)
  • Cards and board games
  • Radio - a solar powered or wind up one is particularly useful
  • Reading material
  • Guide books
  • DVDs - if you have a very well-equipped RV or a portable DVD player
  • iPod with FM transmitter - music to listen to through your RV stereo whilst you are driving

RV-Specific Essentials

  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Toilet chemicals - if you have an RV equipped with a toilet
  • Wood blocks and levelers - to assist in leveling your recreational vehicle
  • Rock salt supply - for water softener
  • Power inverter
  • Battery jumper, cables, flares and flashlight
  • WD40, Duct Tape and Scissors
  • Wrench and Screwdriver
  • Motor Oil
  • Windscreen Wash
  • Engine Coolant
