| Soaring Cliffs, Lots of Trout and Bald Eagles !!! | |
I've camped at Gumboot several times and it's truly majestic. It's very easy to get there as long as the snow has melted... Ha... Got stuck last time... But once up there it's absolutely gorgeous! The few camp sites available make it a very serene place to camp.
Trout fishing is great, and waders or a float tube is a must. Most of the trout are in the middle of the lake and can't cast to the middle with out getting close. But once you do... it's on !!!
Be Bear Aware... Blackies are in the area... (they think it is a nice campsite too). lol
Also, there are several other lakes in the area that make your home camp site even more enjoyable. Just back east of Gumboot, maybe less than a mile, is Clif Lake (yes, spelled with one "f"). Anyway gotta hike to that one, but it's 90 ft. deep. Gin Clearwater, and there's even a small homemade pier that you have to traverse a rolling log to get to, but oh my, the fishing there is great as well. That lake is surrounded by 1,000+ ft cliffs, probably hence the name. Mumbo Lake is also nearby but about five or so miles away. It's higher up so don't attempt to drive their until summer! Haha... But the fishing at Mumbo is so awesome! Anyway I know there are several other small ponds in the area, and I highly recommend you picking up a Forest Service Map !
So Gumboot and area ponds are a great place to camp, fish, hike, etc. Be bear aware, though.
