Though open, no trees, and in the NM desert this was a quiet, friendly campground. We approached Chaco from the East and had to travel a 17 mile dirt road to get there, the last 5 miles on a highly washboard road that forced you to drive slowly, but not bad overall. And now you can reserve a campsite which was not the case 3 years ago. Good move, NPS!
We stayed here in a Tent.

This is a fine and pretty place to stay in a magnificent setting among one of the true highlights of the Southwest. The spaces are a little tight and there isn't a lot of privacy at most sites but the access to the Chaco historical sites makes it all worth it.

No potable water in this campground. No reservations. First come first serve. Fees were reasonable. Running water in the campground bathrooms, but no showers. Only a small number of camp sites available so fairly quiet. During my stay, all the campers were adults or families with mature children. Very laid back and relaxed vibe. If you have a 4wd vehicle, ask the rangers for some back road ruins to visit. Site is nestled at the edge of the canyon with a stunning view of Fajada Butte at sunset.
